Olkkolan Hovi: A Historic Gem by Lake Kuolimo
Olkkolan Hovi is a historically significant destination located in Savitaipale, on the shores of the pristine Lake Kuolimo. Its history spans hundreds of years, and the manor has witnessed many defining moments in the local area’s past.
From a Royal Gift to a Clerical Residence
The estate was originally established as a farm in the 1600s, with its documented history beginning in 1688. In that year, King Charles XI donated the Olkkolan crown farm to the widow of the vicar of Savitaipale. This marked the beginning of a long era where the manor served as a residence and property for church officials, a period that lasted until 1883.

Architectural Elegance: The Fagerström Era
A significant shift occurred in 1883 when the estate passed into the hands of the Fagerström family. Under their ownership, the manor’s current main building was completed in 1906. The building is a magnificent example of the era’s carpentry and Art Nouveau (Jugend) styles. Its design is said to have been influenced by the architectural drawings of the Myrskylä parsonage. Because the main building has preserved its original appearance so remarkably well, it is now protected under the Building Protection Act.
Cultural Heritage and the Europaeus Museum
Olkkolan Hovi is closely linked to several notable local families, most famously the Europaeus family. The Europaeus Museum is located in the immediate vicinity of the manor in the former servants’ quarters. The museum is dedicated to the life and work of David Emmanuel Daniel Europaeus, a prominent Finnish linguist, archaeologist, and collector of folk poetry. Visitors can access the museum by appointment through the D.E.D. Europaeus Society (D.E.D. Europaeus -seura Contact Info Here)
A Modern Destination for Every Season
Today, Olkkolan Hovi is owned by the Municipality of Savitaipale and has evolved into a versatile tourism and service center. Operated by entrepreneur Tommi Naakka, the estate offers a variety of modern amenities:
- Hotel accommodation and high-quality restaurant services.
- A premium caravan area completed in 2022.
While the estate’s role has changed from a traditional large farm into a modern travel destination, its historical atmosphere and the breathtaking lakeside scenery of Kuolimo continue to attract visitors all year round.
